Every December — while the bartenders close down our Proctor District craft beer bar, bottle shop and restaurant for the night — Peaks & Pints co-owner Pappi Swarner would grab three holiday beers, heads upstairs to his office, cranks his computer speaks to an 11 and watches holiday Youtube videos. Obviously, he can’t perform his holiday tradition this year … at Peaks & Pints. No, his holiday happiness now takes place inside his home, much to the chagrin of his wife and daughter. In the spirit of giving, we offer you the chance to share his joy. Today, he pairs the three Reuben’s Brews holiday beers below with a brilliant scene from the movie, Elves. A glorious grade-Z fruitcake made from the most unsavory movie tropes imaginable, the 1989 film smooshes together incest, Nazis, and Santa’s little helpers. Take home the Peaks and Pints To-Go Christmas Beer Flight: Elves and pair the holidays beers and watch an explanation for Nazi Elves who mate with virgins.
Peaks and Pints To-Go Christmas Beer Flight: Elves
Reuben’s Holiday Gose
4.3% ABV, 6 IBU
Reuben’s Brews Holiday Gose is a cranberry-orange variation of its award-winning gose fermented with its house lactobacillus culture and includes 10 pounds of fresh cranberries per barrel, sweet orange zest, a touch of coriander and a hint of sea salt. This sour ale brewed with salted water and coriander, adds tart notes to already punchy olives, while the briny fruit draws out the beer’s underlying saltiness. The beer’s coriander spice matches the olives’ deep herbal notes. Beneath the eruption of flavors is a fusion of earthy and tart that lasts long on the tongue.
Reuben’s Reuben Claus
5.9% ABV, 30 IBU, crowler fill
Eight different grains are used to create Reuben’s Brews’ award-winning Robust Porter, the base for the Seattle brewery’s holiday porter, Reuben Claus. Roasted malts are the star in both aroma and flavor that’s nutty and slightly sweet with an espresso bitterness balanced by a touch of creamy vanilla, chocolate and caramel sweetness, without being cloying or off putting. That is … until Reuben’s Brews’ brewers added candy canes and cocoa nibs. The resulting Reuben Claus holiday porter now has a peppermint nose and flavor with slightly more chocolate flavor.
Reuben’s Three Ryes Men
13.7% AVB
This is the fourth vintage of Reuben’s Brews’ GABF-winning barrel-aged barleywine. Three Ryes Men is brewed with malted rye, flaked rye, and crystal rye and then aged in whiskey barrels where it has rested. After aging, the beer has developed flavors that according to the brewery offer a full body with malt driven caramel and chocolate notes, and layers of warming complexity.
