Matt Swihart and Charlie Devereaux crossed paths while working at Full Sail Brewing in Hood River, Oregon. In February 2006, Swihart saw a “For Lease” sign in one of the few light-industrial-zoned storefronts in downtown Hood River. On St. Patrick’s Day 2007, Swihart and Devereaux opened Double Mountain Brewery & Taproom in said spot, named after Swihart’s orchard, Double Mountain Orchards — where one can look in one direction and see Mt. Adams and then look in the other direction and see Mt. Hood. With a mash tun paddle in one hand and a banjo in the other, Swihart ran the brewery while Devereaux ran the pub, creating a pizza that draws as well as their Belgian-inspired yet Northwest-centric craft beer. Eventually, Swihart became the sole owner, celebrating opening taprooms in the Portland neighborhoods of Woodstock and Overlook. Today, Peaks & Pints will be a top Tacoma destination as we present a Tuesday flight of Double Mountain beer — a flight we’re calling Peaks & Pints Double Mountain Beer Flight.
Peaks & Pints Double Mountain Beer Flight
Double Mountain Kolsch
5.2% ABV
Double Mountain built its empire around 2-row pilsner malt sourced from British Columbia. We’re big fans of Pilsner malt — it imparts a smoothness to the brew, including Double Mountain’s Kolsch. A tribute to the style of beer native to Cologne (Koln), Germany, this beer is a very light straw pour with just a touch of haze and a decent egg-shell-white head. A little pepper, sourdough bread, biscuit, and light hops cross the nose. Firm, tangy hops come through on the palate — Sterling and Perle — a nice combo of soft malt, fresh grain, spicy pepper, and citrus. The finish is light and refreshing.
Double Mountain Hey, Porter!
6.2% ABV
Hey, Porter! is a robust porter — a style known for its depth, dry finish, and stronger alcohol content. Robust porters are bold and complex, with a drier, roast-forward flavor than their sweeter counterparts. This beer pours dark garnet, nearly black, with enticing aromas of roasty, toasty coffee. Each sip offers toffee notes and a hint of raisin, balanced by a mild lingering bitterness that finishes crisp.
Double Mountain Iowa Bar Fight
6.2% ABV
Brewed with nearby Solera Brewery up the hill in Parkdale, this IPA has been a favorite of hop enthusiasts. The founders of both breweries have roots in the Midwest. According to the brewery’s press release, things once familiar change. Old dirt roads get paved, and houses get built in cornfields. Sometimes you eat the bar, other times the bar eats you. Iowa Bar Fight is an ode to those memories and the balance between grit and transformation. In brewing Iowa Bar Fight, the hop bill features one of Double Mountain’s favorite hop combinations, Citra and Mosaic, with a touch of resinous cannabis character from Strata hops in the hop back. The result is a dazzling blend of bright citrus, grapefruit, lush tropical notes, and a balanced bitterness that leans toward West Coast-style IPA, minus the 2003-era aggressiveness and crystal malts.
Double Mountain Hop Lion IPA
6.7% ABV
“Tropic resin, tangerine / Petrichor and evergreen / Fill your chalice, fill it wide / Then pass it upon the left-hand side,” states Double Mountain Hop Lion hype. Hmmm … Matt Swihart is a music freak, Hop Lion’s bottle sports Jamaican colors and “left hand side” … could it be a nod to British Jamaican reggae band Musical Youth? Whatever. This IPA is delicious with bitter, citrus peel like aroma and gritty, malty, earthy and tangerine flavors, mon.
Double Mountain Clucterf#ck IPA
6.8% ABV
When Double Mountain first brewed Clusterf#ck IPA 13 years ago, it was the debut beer in the brewery’s Single Hop Series. Through the years, there have been numerous iterations of this beer since its formulation, and now, as part of Double’s annual From the Vault Series, it is making its triumphant return to the 2025 seasonal lineup. This version of Clusterf#ck IPA takes on what is described as a wild ride of hops, attitude, and nostalgia. Back in the day, Cluster hops were everywhere. Yes, everywhere! They’re a bit harder to track down nowadays, but they’re still out there. Some of their closest hop pals join these Clusters: Citra, Cascade, and Centennial, all packed together for bold flavor and unfiltered fun. Bright citrus and sticky herbal aromas jump out of the glass, with a lively bitterness that brings it together in a beautifully chaotic harmony. This beer is big, expressive, and unapologetically hoppy.
