Share

SATURDAY, JUNE 18 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …

Physique contest + (253) Draft Punk Festival = Date Night with Brian
Pop icons + Digging Line IPA = Saturday Night’s Alright
Funk + Northwest Beerwerks = Mega Dank

PHYSIQUE COMPETITION

If we believed everything on the Internet, and we apparently do, we’d know that the “dad bod” is in vogue right now. Problem is, at the Pantages Theater tonight, we’ll be the only ones. Trends come and go, but hard bodies are forever. Fat chance we’ll see Hollywood cast dad bods in Magic Mike XXL or the next installment of the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise. Anyhoo, glistening pecs and chiseled calves will be on Broadway tonight as the 2016 Tanji Johnson Classic showcases a superb line up of fit physiques and talented fitness competitors. As the contestants pose over loud dance music we won’t know whether to be envious or hold our heavy, double-chinned head in shame.
PREFUNK: If it wasn’t already obvious, Tacoma is keen on craft beer. Nowhere is this more obvious than at The Swiss Restaurant and Pub — the downtown Tacoma pub turned bar has been pouring craft beer since it opened in 1993. Owner Jack McQuade always has craft beer on the brain when planning Swiss events, more so with his (253) Draft Punk Festival beginning at 2 p.m. second annual (253) Draft Punk Festival will be an all-ages (until 8 p.m.), indoor local garage-rock and punk festival showcasing tasty concoctions local brew masters have been whipping up this spring while some of the region’s hardest rocking bands provide the soundtrack: Riffbrokers, Radio On, Date Night with Brian, Trees and Timber, Less Then Equals, DJ M.F. Cake (Kurt Bloch), Machine Animal, The Derelicts, Twink the Wonder Kid, Sir Coyler & His Asthmatic Band, Llama and the DTs.

POP ICONS

What do Billy Joel, Sir Elton John and Carole King have in common? Music by these three famous artists will be featured in Masterworks Choral Ensemble’s 7:30 p.m. concert “Pop Icons” in the Washington Center. Tunes such as “I Feel the Earth Move,” “Uptown Girl,” “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” among others, will be performed by the choir accompanied by an instrumental combo with drums, bass and saxophone.
PREFUNK: Top Rung Brewing Co. will release their new seasonal IPA, Digging Line, in their taproom beginning at noon. Brewed with Pilsner malt and Idaho 7 hops, this beer pays homage to the hard working wildland firefighters out digging fire line to protect lives and property from the devastating effects of wildland fires. Expect aromas of apricot and tropical notes followed with a nice crisp malt finish. And hops.

FUNK NIGHT

A Portland duo consisting of guitarist/producer Teddy Presberg and multi-instrumentalist LeClare Stevenso, DoveDriver bring a blend of funk, jazz and electro rock to the Rhythm & Rye stage at 9 p.m. The band grooves hard like a J Dilla beat but melts minds with John Coltrane sheets of sounds via synths and shredding guitars on the top. Also on the bill is The Funk Agency, a collaboration of three undercover federal funk agents investigating the troubling lack of booty shaking in our country.
PREFUNK: Northwest Beerwerks will celebrate the grand opening of Butt Naked Organics food truck at 7:30 p.m. Grab delicious organic food then head inside for warmth around a pint of Heathen Brewing Mega Dank Imperial IPA, Sound Brewing Sommerweizen, Avery Brewing Hog Heaven Barleywine, Hop Valley Brewing Black Nova Imperial Stout, Crux Stout on nitro and Paradise Creek Brewing Postal Porter, just to name a few. The Brown Edition will be in the house with funk on the brain.
