SATURDAY, JULY 23 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …
The Avett Brothers + Rainier Growlers = Christmas present
Jazzbones + Narrows Brewing Anniversary Party = Stars
The Forgotten 45’s + craft beer = Cascadia Homebrew
THE AVETT BROTHERS
Summer festival favorites the Avett Brothers hail from Concord, N.C., and deal in a populist sort of country-tinged folk-rock that somehow attracts hippies, hipsters and frat boys alike. The Avetts could be the last of the purveyors of great album-oriented rock. They tell stories about what it means to be Southern, to be American, to be alive. Catch the Avett Brothers at 8 p.m. in the ShoWare Center.
PREFUNK: Rainier Growlers is jumping into the Christmas in July pool and the South Hill Puyallup taproom is going big. They’ll be pouring 24 barrel-aged beers, including Bourbon County, B Bomb and Sucaba, We’ll be there with our Christmas sweater on. Please bring us a present. We’d like a Neato Robotics vacuum cleaner. We grew up watching the Jetsons. Subconsciously, we firmly believed that by the time we were old enough to drive and pay rent, we, like everyone else, would have a flying car, a mod triangle-collared minidress, and a clanky, cranky helpmeet just like the Jetsons’ Rosie. We think the Neato vacuum cleaner is as close as it’s going to get this decade. A slick little flying saucer of a machine, it will navigate itself suckingly around the room while we drink B Bombs at Rainier Growlers.
STAR ANNA
Born in Ellensburg, living in Seattle, singer/songwriter Star Anna knows her way around deep, soulful lyrics with an understanding of the human condition far exceeding her young age. She celebrates the release of her new album, Light in the Window” at 9 p.m. in Jazzbones. Adding support will be Carrie Akre, Chantel Renee and Jeanlizabeth.
PREFUNK: Happy third anniversary to Narrows Brewing Company, brewers Mike Davis, Zach Dowling and Zach West and Mary Asami who keeps the whole thing rocking. Housed in a striking, 100-year-old building on pilings, walking into Narrows Brewing can knock you off your feet. It’s huge. The sparkling clean 15-barrel brew house has large doors to receiving as well as the moorage house. The Narrows Bridge and surrounding waterway commands your attention in the high-ceiling tasting room, after you weave your way past three event rooms and 100 seats to get there. At 6 p.m., their third anniversary will launch, spilling out of the taproom into the brewhouse and the adjoining warehouse, and onto the deck. Three reggae bands will keep the parting flowing. Two beer releases — a wheat Anniversary Amber with German Abbey malted barley and Canadian Honey malt and the re-release of Area 13 Experimental Imperial IPA with experimental hops.
BONUS: Cascadia Homebrew hosts Olympia rock band The Forgotten 45’s at 8 p.m. The band cranks out an original sound borrowing from some of the classic music and raw energy of the past. Drink craft beer from the store’s nanobrewery and enjoy top-notch music.
