SATURDAY, APRIL 29 2017: South Sound events + craft beer …

The Spar + Peaks and Pints = Hoohah

Dockyard Derby Dames + The Ram = Dread

MISTER BLACKWATCH

In 2012, Tacoma musician, producer and actor Doug Mackey got the band back together — the band being Mr. Blackwatch, which was born, lo, many years ago when the band had issues with cows, kites, a monster, a snake, a robot, bongos and “Orange,” and the only cure was to work through the issues musically. The band still has issues, thankfully. Tonight, Mr. Blackwatch messes with The Spar crowd, unleashing cows, robots, bongos, half a dozen lasers, a smoke machine, Charlton Heston, Cher and new band member Jesse Jay Allen for an unforgettable evening of music, B.S., and hoohah, beginning at 8 p.m.

PREFUNK: For more than three weeks, Peaks and Pints challenged 64 of Washington state’s best India Pale ales to go IBU-to-IBU in a showdown of craft combat. Some fell easily by the wayside, either due to a rogue mash tun cleaner or simply because they faced a superior opponent. Hop by hop, the state drank its way down to yesterday’s Final Four: Rainy Daze Goat Boater IPA, Top Rung Shift Trade IPA, Stoup Citra IPA Walking Man IPA. It was do-or-die, win-or-fly, bring-your-best-or-oxidize. The titanic IPA throwdown finale in on! Voting for the 2017 Tournament of Beer: Washington State IPAs Championship game is live featuring Rainy Daze Brewing’s Goat Boater IPA and Walking Man Brewing’s IPA. Online voting will end at 4 p.m. Voting will resume at 5 p.m. live at the Tournament of Beers Party at Peaks and Pints, 3816 N. 26th St. in Tacoma’s Proctor District. Ballots will be handed out, which will also serve as raffle tickets for sweet prizes. The live vote will close at 8:30 p.m., tallied and the Washington state IPA champion will be announced at 9 p.m. Peaks and Pints has tapped many of the state’s IPAs that advanced far in the Tournament of Beer.

ROLLER DERBY

There’s a thunder on the horizon, South Sound, and it’s not Joint Base Lewis-McChord. No, that ominous rumble you hear, pitched way, way down in the basso profundo hum of a gathering tremor, is nothing more than the return of the Dockyard Derby Dames: Tacoma’s premier roller derby league and an all-around explosion of eight-wheeled badassery. The action returns for season 12 when Dockyard’s travel team, Wave of Mutilation, battles the Rainier Roller Girls at 6 p.m. in Pierce College’s Heath Ed Center.

PREFUNK: The RAM Restaurant and Brewery has tapped their Big Dread IPA. This American-style IPA is the kinder brother of The RAM’s Big Red IPA and is only available for a limited time. Big Dread is hopped with Hop Hash to create a dank hop and laid-back character. “Hop Hash, more literally hop kief, is a powder of aromatic hop crystals and oils without excessive plant matter and imparts a clean concentrated hop flavor,” said Dave Leonard, director of Brewery Operations. The hazy, copper-hued IPA is packed with hops that create billowing aromas and resinous flavors.
