ONE FOR HIS NOB

He proclaimed himself to be cribbage champion of the world, which was ballsy, considering he’s only ever won two games. She suspects his strategy is to distract his opponents with his quick-witted charm and good looks. It’s working; she’s smitten. He: dapper fellow with black framed glasses and salt & pepper hair. She: tall redhead with dimples. Rematch? Then, head to Doyle’s Public House for its “One for his Nob” Cribbage Tournament from 2:30-6 p.m. There is a $5 registration fee with all the proceeds being paid out to the first and second place finishers. This may affect her amateur status so she should check with her governing boards before entering.
PREFUNK: Games of skill and chance have been as much a part the tavern experience for as long as there have taverns themselves, going back to the days when esteemed European gentleman played lawn games outside of pubs, and even earlier. The games have evolved over time, of course, but have kept the same goal throughout the eons: keeping bar patrons entertained and in the mood to buy more pints. At 1:30 p.m., Gig Harbor Brewing Co. hosts another Shuffleboard Showdown with “$4 Pints & Flights of tasty Gig Harbor Brewing craft beer.

TACOMA THEATER CARES

The Tacoma theater community is coming together to support the victims of the Orlando massacre with a special one night only staged reading of The Laramie Project at 7:30 p.m. in the Tacoma Little Theatre. The brainchild of Rachel Fitzgerald, 31 actors — the best of Tacoma’s talent — will volunteer their time to tell a real-life, contemporary American tragedy: the brutal killing of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student, who was beaten, tied to a fence and left to die by two young men he had met in a bar. Admission is free; donations will benefit Equality Institute of Florida and Rainbow House.
PREFUNK: You gotta eat, and everybody needs a little entertainment. Mash up the two and life gets a lot better. But wait! What if you add craft beer? That’s exactly what’s going down at the Taste of Tacoma today. Consider it a mini South Sound beer fest. A $20 admission buys a tasting glass and five 5.5-ounce pours from five South Sound breweries — 7 Seas, Fish Brewing, Narrows Brewing, Northwest Brewing Co. and Odd Otter. Each brewery will pour up to four beer choices in the Rose Garden. Bonus: Put a coaster on your taster glass and head over to the chef demo station. Hudson Slater of the Tacoma Yacht Club (1 p.m.), Aura Mae, the Kitchen Beautician (2 p.m.), and Tom Pantley of Toscanos Italian Grill (5 p.m.) have something to show you.
