TACOMA PREFUNK FRIDAY, AUG. 18 2017: Walking Man Yoga Pants and Phasers On Kill

PREFUNK: Hooray for yoga pants, man. We mean, for dudes it’s the obvious thrill of lowbrow ogling, but for the ladies, too, they rock — best-case scenario they show off your ass, worst case they’re comfortable. They’re basically sweatpants, except tighter and socially acceptable, right? “Going out” sweatpants, if you will. Walking Man Brewing rocks the Yoga Pants, too. (Hold on.) wait, Walking Man’s Yoga Pants isn’t clothing. Yes, the brewery sits along the Columbia River Gorge where many athletic fly honeys are clad in formfitting, moisture-wicking goodness, that is to say, women whose interest in physical fitness evinces a preference for clothing that allows for maximum mobility. No, rather Walking Man’s Yoga Pants is a golden ale tight with lavender, chamomile and lemongrass. The clean, highly flocculent ale yeast gets its workout on fermentables extracted from pilsner malt, torrified wheat and honey malt, balanced in the kettle by an early thrust of Horizon for bitterness and Citra hops for late flavor and aroma additions. Perfect for 16-ounce curls. Walking Man’s Yoga Pants struts its bad self along Peaks and Pints’ Western red cedar tap log today.

1:45, 3:50, 6 AND 8:15 P.M. STEP: The Grand Cinema screens STEP, the true-life story of a girls’ high school step team set against the background of the heart of Baltimore. As each one tries to become the first in their families to attend college, the girls strive to make their dancing a success against the backdrop of the social unrest in the troubles city.

7 P.M. THE COMMANDERS: The Commanders, a newly-revived ensemble coming from the US Air Force Band of the Golden West, features 18 airmen delivering the full gamut of jazz music — traditional jazz, cool, bop, swing, Broadway favorites and patriotic music — at the Rialto Theater.

8 P.M. PHASERS ON KILL: The Valley welcomes local rockers Phasers on Kill, and almost surely packing as much pop-punk punch as ever. It can be assumed that anyone who went to high school in the early-to-mid ’90s and still holds an affinity for the cavity causing punk rock of the period will find something to enjoy in Phasers on Kill. Burn Burn Burn, Junebugs and The Hop Monsters join the fun.
