PREFUNK: “Aphotic” is an ancient Greek word meaning “without light.” It has been adopted by oceanography to describe an area of a body of water beyond which less than 1 percent of sunlight is able to reach. Peaks and Pints doubts that High Water Brewing’s Aphotic Imperial Porter carries the same darkness, but it’s damn tasty. Brewed with Demerara sugar, molasses and star anise aged with Ghana cacao nibs from TCHO chocolate. Peaks and Pints has this delicious, multiple award-winning porter pouring from our Western red cedar tap log. It hits the nose with chocolate, intense fresh coffee, light earthiness and roasted malts. On the tongue expect caramel malts, cocoa, milk chocolate and earthiness with fresh coffee and sugary sweetness.

NOON TO 8 P.M. NORTH 47 ANNIVERSARY: Husband and wife duo Carl and Stephanie Leach have always had beer in common. Their relationship started at Central Washington University when Stephanie enjoyed helping Carl with his home brewing. It became their passion — when Carl wasn’t studying to be an eventual reservist in the Air Force and Stephanie wasn’t fine-tuning her studies that eventually lead to a career in tourism. Two years ago, the duo opened North 47 Brewing Co.’s in the Browns Point neighborhood north of Tacoma. Today, they celebrate their second anniversary with live music including Kristen Marlo, giveaways and a free 20-ounce special second anniversary glass to the first 100 customers who enjoy of their delicious craft beers.

5 P.M. 12TH ANNUAL BLUES VESPERS HARMONICA SHOWCASE: Consider the harmonica. The melodies produced by those 10 little holes can sound like a freight train, a Hammond B-3 or a moaning woman, depending on the song. A good harmonica player seems like he never breathes, he just blows and blows and blows until his ears say enough, and the intricate collection of notes and rhythms hangs over the audience like a heavy lace curtain. That’s about the time people start screaming like wildcats and demanding more, which is exactly what will happen tonight when the 12th annual Blues Vespers Harmonica Showcase blows into Tacoma’s Northslope neighborhood gathering spot, Immanuel Presbyterian Church.
