COSMIC GARAGE ROCK
The Seattle-based The Rainy Splish Splosh Band released their debut “World’s Warmest Dads” Feb. 16, and it combines elements of Tame Impala, the Black Keys and Red Hot Chili Peppers, all while creating a sound entirely their own. Joining the cosmic garage rockers at 9 p.m. in The Swiss will be pop rockers Trees and Timber and blues rockers Chrono Bats, both from Tacoma.
PREFUNK: A multi-pronged offensive into the gullet of beer fans nationwide, Sierra Nevada’s Beer Camp Across America is part roving beer festival and part collaboration beer series, that for the next few months will have a presence in six cities in the form of Beer Camp Across America festivals — including Seattle June 11, bottle shops in the form of a one-time-only 12-packs containing Sierra Nevada beers brewed in collaboration with other craft breweries, and in local bars in the form of parties, such as the Parkway Tavern at 6 p.m. The Parkway will pour Beer Camp-West Latitude, Beer Camp-Stout of the Union, Beer Camp- Moxee Moron, Beer Camp-Family Values, Beer Camp-Pat Rye Ot and Beer Camp-Sweet Sunny South, as well as Sierra Nevada Pale, Ruthless, Summerfest, 5 Hop, Hoptimum, 2013 Bigfoot and 2014 Narwhal. Wow.
CHANDLER O’LEARY
Tacoma artist Chandler O’Leary is kind of infatuated with travel — and this is a good thing. For one, it resulted in “Jaunt + Jot,” a solo sketchbook exhibition chronicling her travels through pocket-sized drawings and scribbled anecdotes at the Feast Arts Center in Tacoma. Drop by the opening reception at 6 p.m.
PREFUNK: Narrows Brewing will release its Wit Summer Ale today. Expect to drink a light, Belgian Wit style beer with floral spicy notes and coriander seeds and dried orange peel on the tonight. The brewery’s taproom opens at 2 p.m.
KAREEM KANDI BAND
Saxophonist Kareem Kandi’s sound derives from the classic, free, often enthusiastic tradition of Joshua Redman as filtered through Dexter Gordon and Sonny Stitt, all of whose shadows can be traced-Redman in Kandi’s funky organicism, Gordon in his dynamic harmonics, Stitt in the intensity that coats his every note with a Gritty City finish. The Kareem Kandi Band performs from 8-11 p.m. at G. Donnalson’s in Tacoma’s Proctor District.
PREFUNK: Oh, she’s a wild one. Silver City Brewery will release its Charming Disarmer Oak Barrel-Aged Wild Ale at noon in its Bremerton taproom. Aged for two years in a barrel that once housed Chardonnay, peaches, wheat, and the vanilla traits of the oak are brought together by brettanomyces, lending a subtle tartness.
COMICSTRIP CABARET
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, vaudeville was by far the most popular form of entertainment in America. Sadly, the advent of radio and talking pictures killed it off by about 1925 or so, as people became (and still are) more fascinated by compact, one- or two-dimensional forms of visual stimuli. For now at least, small, cabaret-style shows are a welcome, and burgeoning, addition to fringe culture such as Dessi DeVine Productions’ new monthly ComicStrip Cabaret. Every third Thursday, a rotating cast of burlesque dancers, comedians, vocalists, musicians, drag and other vaudevillian and circus performers will consume Jazzbones beginning at 8 p.m. They say laughter is good medicine. Here’s a heaping spoonful of proof.
PREFUNK: The Copper Door is going dark tonight, and by dark we mean Avery Brewing Company dark. The Boulder, Colorado brewery will unleash The Beast Grand Cru (15% ABV), Samael’s Oak-Aged Ale 2015, Tweak Bourbon Barrel Aged Coffee Stout, Vanilla Bean stout, Czar Imperial Stout and others. Many Shuvs and Zuuls will know what it is to be roasted in the depths of the Slor beginning at 6 p.m., we can tell you!
