DANCING PLAGUE OF 1518
In July 1518, residents of the city of Strasbourg (then part of the Holy Roman Empire) were struck by a sudden and seemingly uncontrollable urge to dance. The hysteria kicked off when a woman known as Frau Troffea stepped into the street and began to silently twist, twirl and shake. She kept up her solo dance-a-thon for nearly a week, and before long, some three-dozen other Strasbourgeois had joined in. By August, the dancing epidemic had claimed as many as 400 victims. With no other explanation for the phenomenon, local physicians blamed it on “hot blood” and suggested the afflicted simply gyrate the fever away. Many dancers collapsed from sheer exhaustion. The strange episode didn’t end until September, when the dancers were whisked away to a mountaintop shrine to pray for absolution. The Dancing Plague of 1518 is also a one-man band, Conor Knowles of Spokane, who through his looping guitar creates layers and layers of shoegaze dreampop. The Dancing Plague of 1518 hits Le Voyeur at 10 p.m. with Blonde Lip and Mermaid In China adding to the mayhem.
PREFUNK: Top Rung Brewing Co. bids their sales executive Mike Besser a fond farewell with a party at 7 p.m. Besser recently opened BrewDad’s of Bonney Lake, a bottle shop and taproom where NW Caps ‘N Taps sat in Bonney Lake. Drop by and watch Besser hug Top Rung founders Casey and Jason for probably an inappropriate long time as well as enjoy the Lacey brewery’s delicious craft beers, including their Lacey Lager on the Randall with rosemary.
PUGET SOUND BREWS AND NEWS
The Boston Harbor Marina hosts “Puget Sound Brews and News,” a night to discuss local efforts toward conservation and restoration while drinking South Sound craft beer. At 6:30 p.m., the South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group will chat up the seven species of Pacific Salmon and the latest research and restoration that is happening in the South Sound while Three Magnets Brewing pours beers.
PREFUNK: Fish Brewing Company releases their Strawberry Blonde in the neighboring Fish Tale Brew Pub at 5 p.m. The July pub-only light lager sports a huge strawberry flavor.
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
Dracula isn’t the only one to seek out human blood. No, a tiny plant with innocent, humble beginnings shares the same craving. Just what you expected, right? Little Shop of Horrors, a “killer” Broadway show, is about florist Seymour Krelbourn, who makes a pact with an exotic plant to win over the girl he loves. Soon, Krelbourn realizes that the hungry plant won’t be satisfied with just light and soil — it has a bloodthirsty secret. Harlequin Productions stages the show at 8 p.m.
PREFUNK: Hood River’s pFriem Family Brewers brews a host of exceptional beers (we would happily drown in vats of their Wit and Belgian Strong Dark ale), and tonight they take over the taps at Oly Taproom from 6-9 p.m. There will be pFriem merch and —yeah — really, really good beer such as the IPA, Pilsner, Flanders Blonde and on and on.
