Classical Tuesdays + El Tufo = Love

LIVE ACTION SHORTS

Today, The Grand Cinema presents the 2017 Oscar-nominated Live Action Short Films, a 130-minute program, with material ranging from the comic to the political. Sélim Azzazi’s “Ennemis Interieur” (France, 28 min.) is a two-hander in which a man is applying for French citizenship. An immigrant from Ghana struggling to find work in Copenhagen in “Silent Nights” (Denmark, 30 min.) strikes up a romantic relationship with a lonely woman who works at a homeless shelter. The indefatigable human spirit fuels “La Femme et le TGV” (Switzerland, 30 min.), in which an elderly woman waves a flag every morning at the train that passes her cottage. In Kristof Deák and Anna Udvardy’s “Sing” (Hungary, 25 min.), it’s up to the children of an award-winning school choir to sort out what to do about a corrupt system. Juanjo Giménez’s “Timecode” (Spain, 15 min.) follows two parking-garage security guards for delightful story of human connection set in a very nice parking garage. Catch these five films at 1 and 6:30 p.m.

PREFUNK: Peaks and Pints loves Valentine’s Day! What a sweet opportunity to love your lovey, or else throw your love on a desired lovey. Screw Valentine’s Day! What a sick opportunity for third-rate corporations (the greeting card people, the chocolate people, the flower people) to guilt the in-love into spending money, or else threaten the out-of-love with feelings of inadequacy and alienation. Peaks and Pints loves Valentine’s Day! It’s the one day when everyone will feel a little loved. Screw Valentine’s Day! No one will feel loved; those who do are fakers — unwilling participants in a cruel-cruel lie. Ah, Valentine’s Day … it never fails to make schizophrenics of us all. Peaks and Pints understands. We present Be Our Sour Valentine with E9 Brewery. The Tacoma brewery will provide their award-winning sours, plus their delicious Todd of the Rings IPA and a firkin of E9’s Michelle The Gamer IPA, while singer/songwriter and Peaks and Pints bartender Kristen Marlo sings songs of love gone wrong. Deposit the written name of an ex-lover in the “Take A Hike” Backpack, and glory in the knowledge that actual hiking pagans will ritually reduce the paper into a pile of smoldering ash, compliments of the neighboring fire station. Too creepy? Try mingling, maybe. Too tame? Outrageous dress is encouraged. Too wild? Outrageous dress is not required.

COURTLY LOVE

The Tuesday Classic Music in Old Town series lands on Valentine’s Day, which means classical love songs. The musical group Canonici will float into the Slavonian Hall with lovely music from the medieval and renaissance eras. The music and hand-holding begins at 7 p.m.

PREFUNK: STINK Cheese & Meat and El Tufo — Kris Blondin’s houses of deliciousness — are also jumping on the love stinks bandwagon. OK, Blondin’ doesn’t think love stinks, but sometimes wine and cheese stink. El Tufo will offer some seriously stinky, delicious wines and cheeses for $5 per person (+tax) for just wine and $10 (+tax) for both cheese and wine, from 5-8 p.m.
