TUESDAY, MAY 17 2016: South Sound events + craft beer …
Swampy Draws + Samuel Smith = bizarro night
Louis XIV tunes + Wisdom Seeker Imperial IPA = Louisiana arguments
PUNK COUNTRY NIGHT
Bob Wayne’s country songs stick to your gut like good chili, the way the godfathers of country intended. There’s no plastic emotion or Keith Urban facial hair with Bob Wayne, just a bit of soul-bearing and a dash of beer swilling. Wayne joins bizarro punk jugband Swampy Draws and punkgrass band The Rusty Cleavers for an 8 p.m. show at The Valley.
PREFUNK: Meet Samuel Smith himself, of Britain’s famed Samuel Smith Brewery, Charles Finkel, co-owner of Pike Brewing Company and Conor McDonald of Pelican Brewing Company, and enjoy a comparative tasting of beers from all three breweries, from 6-9 p.m. at The Swiss Restaurant and Pub.
EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL
If you’ve ever doubted that it is indeed good to be the king, consider Louis XIV of France, whose job perks included a staff of 30 to 100 musicians who followed him everywhere he went in the course of a day. And we do mean everywhere: Louis’s arising, dressing, promenading and doing of other kingly stuff, dining, relaxing, and going to sleep were all accompanied by a royal soundtrack, played live. Louis’s roster of composers was an impressive one, with Jean-Baptiste Lully absolutely at the top of the tree, whose branches included such great 17th-century French names as Nicolas Clérambault, Michel Delalande, Francois Couperin, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, and Marin Marais. They are heard today, but they’re mostly remembered for one or two “Baroque Greatest Hits” favorites, which represent the very tip of a huge iceberg. The Salish Sea Early Music Festival presents an immersion into the musical atmosphere generated by celebrated musicians of the court of Louis XIV in this program entitled “Versailles” with baroque flutist Jeffrey Cohan, viola da gamba player Joanna Blendulf and baroque guitarist and theorbo player John Lenti at 7:30 p.m. in Mason United Methodist Church, 2710 N. Madison, Tacoma.
PREFUNK: The annual celebration of Seattle and beer is so big it doesn’t actually fit into a single week, and sprawls all over the city, with events like Seattle Cask-O-Rama, Iron Brewers, Women in Beer, Sour Fest, and more all occurring under it’s sudsy umbrella. The Copper Door in Tacoma’s Stadium District thought it would get in on the Seattle Beer Week love, focusing its Tasting Tuesday beer flight session on Seattle. Beginning at 6 p.m., you may drink 4-ounce pours of Reuben’s Brews Daily Pale, Pike Brewing’s Space Needle Golden IPA, Fremont Brewing’s The Sister Imperial IPA and Black Raven’s Wisdom Seeker Imperial IPA.
